History of the History-maker

She was born and raised
in Brooklyn, New York
Haile was born on July 2nd
to William & Eleanor Alford

Haile is the 3rd
of 5 children &
their only daughter
She loved to learn
and excelled in school
Haile would later attend
Hunter College to become
a teacher

She began teaching
in the New York
Education System
Haile loved making a positive
difference in the lives
of youth
However, she soon became
disenfranchised w
the bureaucracy of the
school system

A chance conversation
w a female attorney
inspired her to go
to Law School

Haile went to Rutgers
School of Law
She graduated w her J.D. & later passed the Delaware Bar

She had a successful career as a
corporate attorney at Hercules
& later Aqualon
Haile had 2 children
early in her career &
mastered the balance
between motherhood
& career
Along w a successful
career in law she had a
passion for antiques,
owning a store
she ran on the
weekends, playing
bridge, biking and sewing

Haile made history in 1992 when she was appointed the 1st African American female judge
to the Superior Court in Delaware
She joined the ranks
of other history making
women
Haile sat on the bench
until her untimely
passing in 2003

Despite her many
accomplishments
her children were the
greatest source of her
pride, especially when her son
graduated from law school &
her daughter obtained her
MBA
Haile’s vibrant spirit is
missed by many
Her legacy, however,
lives on

Haile continues to inspire –
along w her foundation programming
her law family has provided
annual scholarships to aspiring lawyers
totalling over $30,000
